Customize categories

drifty sorts time three ways: productivity (focus, neutral, drift), categories (Work, Learning, Communication, and the rest), and projects. Customize categories is the one place where you define all three.

  • the pencil at the end of the Your Day or Your Week legend
  • Manage… under the category, productivity, or project picker in an activity’s details
  • the Classification page header, or Manage in the correction popover
  • Edit on the Projects page
  • Settings → General

Choose the Productivity, Categories, or Projects tab and click a row to open it. Each item has a name, a color, and one description.

The description starts as drifty’s own wording. When you write your own, classification reads it as your boundary for that item, for example “Slack counts as neutral, even for work” or “conference talks on YouTube are Learning”. A closed row shows a description only when you wrote one. Restore default puts back drifty’s name, color, and description.

Edits stay drafts until you press Save (⌘/Ctrl+Enter). Cancel discards them.

  • New category adds a category, up to 20 in all. Give it a name and a short description so classification knows when to use it.
  • New level adds a productivity level, up to three extra levels alongside focus, neutral, and drift. An added level counts as neutral in the score, leaderboard, and share card.
  • Deleting a category stops it being used for new activity. Past records keep its name and color, and you can restore it from the deleted list. Focus, neutral, and drift can be renamed but not deleted.
  • Drag a row, or press ⌥/Alt + ↑ or ↓ on it, to change the order. The order is used everywhere categories are listed.

Open a productivity level, for example Drift, and add categories to it. Those categories then always count at that level. Categories you leave out are judged activity by activity.

Your descriptions apply to activity classified from then on. Saving never reclassifies past records, so it costs no AI requests; fix a past record with the correction popover. App and site rules and your own corrections still win over descriptions.

Custom names, colors, and descriptions are stored locally. With device sync on, your category settings also sync through your account to your other computers. Classification sends your category and productivity definitions to the AI connection you chose so it can follow them. The leaderboard, teams, and share images keep drifty’s built-in names.
